I heard a definition for forgiveness that I absolutely love. Forgiveness is surrendering the right to judge back to God. I honestly can’t judge someone. I don’t have all the information. I can’t discern the thoughts and the intents of their hearts. I don’t know their history. All I can do is speculate and judge based on limited information. God has all the information, so He is the only One that can judge righteously. When I set myself up as judge, I am putting myself in the place of God. When I surrender my need and my right to judge someone for an offense that’s been done against me or even a belief I have about their character, I am saying to God that He is the righteous judge and I am surrendered to His will… whatever He decides. If He decides to bless them… then blessed be the Name of the Lord… the Lord is a righteous judge. If they experience the pain of their consequences, I don’t rejoice in their suffering but I say the Lord has judged righteously between us. In either case, I’m not hooked by the offense any longer because I’ve forgiven them and now I am free to express God’s love… even to those who have greatly offended me. Who do you need to forgive today?
bearing with one another, and forgiving one another, if anyone has a complaint against another; even as Christ forgave you, so you also must do.
